LOT NUMBER 107
Japanese Arita Plate with Famille Rose Decoration, late C19th
An unusual plate of gently lobed circular form, decorated in underglaze blue with overglaze enamels and gilding, the centre with a stylised lotus pod surrounded by four stylised lotus flowers, all within a diaper pattern border in yellow, pink and green, the rim with four panels in underglaze blue with gilding and a roundel in iron red, the shape loosely depicting a cup, and between four irregularly shaped panels with yellow and black ground segments decorated with lotus, peony and chrysanthemum, the rim gilt and the reverse decorated with floral sprays in underglaze blue.Ceramics decorated in the Chinese ‘Famille Rose’ palette were exported by Japan in the late nineteenth century and are sometime confused with their counterparts but there is nothing ‘Chinese’ about the decoration here and the range of colours, the irregularly shaped panels and the striking use of the underglaze blue ground are distinctively ‘Japanese’ and quite arresting in their effect.
