Japanese Celadon glaze vase with enamel decoration, late C19th

A Japanese vase of ovoid form with a short slightly concave neck, the celadon glaze with raised enamel decoration in green, white and pink of flowering peony, the base glazed in white. Many pieces of enameled celadon ware were produced by the Japanese potters for export to the West in a variety of forms including vases, jardinieres and garden seats, the latter implying, perhaps, a destination of the conservatory. Their appeal is obvious and the work is of high quality. This vase, one, no doubt, of an original pair is a typical example with its rich celadon glaze enhanced by the floral decoration. Dating is most likely towards the end of the Meiji period (1868-1912) around 1900. The provenance of these pieces is uncertain, although sometimes Seto ware, better known for its productions in blue and white, is suggested.
