Japanese Polychrome Bowl, Shibata Toki ware, late c20th
A fine quality Japanese porcelain bowl with deep sides curving in towards the base and with ribbing in the lower section, the interior delicately decorated in polychrome enamels with a design of flowering peony, the exterior with gilt diaper work on an iron red ground above a border of repeating stylised leaves, the base with a four character mark in iron red reading ‘Shiba-ta-to-ki’, ‘Shibata Porcelain’. The porcelain manufacturer Shibata began production in 1948, based at Mizunami city, near to Nagoya in Japan. They were known for their fine quality porcelains whose work resembles that of the nineteenth century Fukagawa kilns. Their pieces are marked, as here, sometimes with the addition of their name in Western lettering. This bowl probably dates to the 1970s and is a fine example of their work.
