Japanese Tea Bowl Tenmoku Glaze with Blue and White Decoration, late C20th
This is an interesting Japanese tea bowl of typical rounded form with a short foot, the exterior with a mirror black glaze with very feint brown effects, resembling the well known ‘tenmoku’ glazes originally developed by Chinese potters, and the interior with a finely detailed design in underglaze blue of two peacocks amidst peony and rocks within an elaborate stylised floral border edged with a diaper pattern border at the rim. The base with a brown wash to the interior of the foot. Other examples of this design combination are known, which is unique to Japan, sometimes in a larger size, but the apparent artistry belies the fact that on very close inspection (and under magnification) the interior decoration has in fact been laser printed. The separation of the minute blue dots can be seen most clearly in the flowers by the birds’ heads. A decorative piece of mischief then and perhaps a valuable reminder to the collector of ‘caveat emptor’ and to be included in a collection as such.Size: | Diam 9.3cm Ht 5.3cm Base 3.5cm |
