Continental Ceramic Tape Measure in the form of a Dog, 1950s
This is an amusing piece of 'kitsch' art production and is a ceramic figure of a dog whose felt tongue pulls out to reveal a short tape measure. The animal is depicted seated with its front paws extended and the brightly coloured enamel decoration employs geometric designs typical of the 1950s. The piece is marked 'Foreign' at the base which suggests a variety of possibilities for the place of manufacture, but the most likely location would have been Germany or Austria. Many pieces of German ceramics were exported with a 'Foreign' mark in the mid twentieth centurty and this is probably an example. Other versions of the model can be found with different colourings but the same design and mark. Not the most practical of objects but a highly entertaining one and an amusing decorative accessory.Size: | 11 x 8 cm |
