Oil Painting, Shakespeare Cliff, Dover, unsigned, C20th
It is easier to identify the subject of this painting than the artist who painted it. The white cliff outcrop in the background is the well known ‘Shakespeare Cliff’ situated just to the West of Dover harbour and famous for its association with the play ‘King Lear’ as well as for its coastal views. It was often painted and even caught the imagination of Turner who captured many views of it including one aspect closer up but similar to that seen here (see image 9). In this picture, the cliff is a backdrop for a maritime coastal scene with riggers beached below and cockle boats with a fisherman in the foreground while various bystanders survey the scene. All the elements depicted are Victorian and some of the representations to be found do date from that period, but the style of the work here, particularly the semi impressionistic treatment of the rocks looks later and an early twentieth century dating seems more likely. But the anonymous artist was accomplished and has produced an attractive version of a well known composition.| Size: | Width 41cm, Ht 31.5cm, Depth 1.8cm |
