Stumpwork embroidery picture of a Young Couple dancing, C20th
An embroidery panel of a young couple dancing in a stylised garden scene. Each wears European, possibly Swiss, dress, the young man with a short sleeved embroidered jacket and a broad brimmed hat, the young lady with flowing skirts and a bonnet tied with a blue ribbon. Some of the work is heavily stitched to produce a ‘3D’ effect, notably the bonnet ribbons and the plant leaves, which is a feature of the so called ‘stumpwork’ technique, found elsewhere on a floral panel in this auction. The general style is slightly abstract and has very much a mid century feel suggesting a dating to the 1950s and the frame could well be contemporary with this.
