Victorian papier-mâché Tray with brass handle, English second half C19th
This is an excellent example of the papier-mâché serving trays which were made in England in the mid to late nineteenth century. The papier-mâché technique, which employs pieces of pulped paper and binding agents which can be shaped to form a variety of objects, sometimes with the addition of some form of backing, dated back over two thousand years and was first used in China. It enjoyed a wide appeal and was taken up enthusiastically by Victorian craftsmen who produce a range of highly decorative objects in the medium, one of which was the swing handled serving tray. Here, the black ground is covered with colourful painted decoration, a central spray of flowers within a stylised gilt floral border inlaid with mother of pearl. The brass swing handle has floral terminals with twisting ribbon decoration and a central leaf and berry spray and the reverse is plain. As a result of the technique, papier-mâché pieces are easily subject to damage and wear to the decoration but neither is the case here making this an attractive and desirable item of decoration.| Size: | Diam 21cm (max), Ht (tray 1.7cm, Ht (with handle raised) 10cm, Base 15cm |
