Burmese Black Lacquer and Gilt Scroll Stand, C20th
A scroll stand, the papier-mâché body covered with black lacquer with gilt decoration, formed as a cylindrical tube imitating a scroll with ‘handles’ at each end and open at the top with two spreading feet below. The black lacquer surface is richly decorated in gold with scrolling stylised foliage either side of the body, the terminals similarly decorated and with a Burmese lion, or ‘Chinthe’, at each end; the interior is also finished in smooth black lacquer which remains in excellent condition. Other examples of this form are known, some marked ‘Burma’ underneath. While originally presumably designed for devotional use they can fulfil a decorative function as well in a contemporary setting. Dating is usually to the early C20th.Size: | Length 38cm, Width (max exc feet) 5.5cm, Ht 8cm, Feet 7cm |
