A Blue Glass Sunburst Bowl, probably by Pavel Panek, Czech 1980s
A Blue Glass 'Sunburst' Design Bowl of shallow form with straight flaring sides modelled with repeating icicle like shards with pointed edges, the base flat and with an indented foot. The design here is very much representative of the Art Deco period but was made much later. The manufacturing technique is that of pressed glass in which molten glass is pressed into a mould with a plunger. This was the most common way to produce inexpensive glass from the middle of the 19th century onwards and enjoyed a great vogue in England in the 1920s and 1930s. But this piece is most likely the work of the Czech designer Pavel Panek who worked for Sklo Union, Czechoslovakia and dates to the late 1970s/early 1980s. Very similar pieces form part of Tauno Wirkkala's 'Northern Lights' series for the Humppila glassworks in Finland but most of his pieces are signed and the modelling of his 'sunburst' designs less precise. This bowl is of an exceptionally large size and has miraculously survived undamaged with all its pointed edges intact. A truly distinctive centrepiece recreating the style of an earlier era.Size: | Diam 39cm (max), Ht 10cm (max) |
