Pukeberg Glass Horse Head with label, 1970s

A heavily modelled glass head of a horse with a raised mane, the abstract form enhanced by an ‘ice glass’ effect whereby the clear glass was given a textured effect in order to represent a block of ice from which the figure was formed. As the label indicates, this was a product of the well known Pukeberg Glass works in Sweden, founded in 1871 by C.W. Nystrom, who had previously worked at Kosta. The factory started to manufacture decorative glass in the 1930s and still continues production today. This piece dates to the 1970s and was designed by Stig A. Karrstrand. It is a fine example of modernist Scandinavian design and retains its maker’s label which is quite unusual. The weight suggests a paperweight form and other naturalistic pieces were produced at the same time to provide the same function but this example can be enjoyed just for its own decorative appeal.
