Chinese Bronze Scroll Weight in the form of a standing Goat, Qing Dynasty

A powerfully modelled small bronze sculpture of a goat, standing alert on raised feet, its head turned backwards to the left, the mane, chest, face and horns all carefully detailed and the whole with a rich dark brown patina. The goat is the eighth of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac and symbolises creativity and calm. It is therefore a fit subject for a scroll weight and this is doubtless the function of this attractive sculpture in miniature. Weight, patina and quality of casting are all indicative of fine craftsmanship but dating is inevitably speculative, certainly within the nineteenth century but just possibly earlier. Definitely a desk ornament for a contemporary scholar!
