Print by Kanu Desai, Rhythm, from the Geet Govind series, C20th

Kanu Desai (1907-1980) was an Indian artist and art director. In 1947, his production company released a film titled ‘Geet Govind’ based on the novel ‘Prembhakta Kavi Jaydev’ written by the prolific Indian novelist and essayist Jaybhikhkhu, the pen name of Balabhai Virchand Desai (1908-1969). A series of prints based on this film was released afterwards of which this is an example, carrying Desai’s distinctive signature at the bottom right (‘(कनु’ which reads as ‘Kanu’). It is entitled ‘Rhythm’ and probably dates to the mid twentieth century, The movement and motion of the two figures, depicted in vivid colours, aptly matches the subject of the print.
