LOT NUMBER 94
Brass Art Nouveau style frame and mirror, Pierre Bex, France, late C20th
A brass rectangular frame and matching oval hand mirror, each decorated with cast art nouveau style designs, to the right a lady with her left hand cupped to her ear and her right grasping a tree trunk and both pieces also with floral motifs. Both these pieces come from a range of Art Nouveau and Art Deco reproductions made by the French firm Pierre Bex. Founded in Nancy in 1969, the company moved to Avignon in the 1970s and produced a substantial volume of jewellery and fashion wares supplying such firms as Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Lacroix and Christian Dior until it ceased activity in 1992. A website still exists today selling pieces from their original stock which cannot now be recreated. The rectangular frame can be seen in one of their early catalogues, where it has the model number.439 59/01(see images 10, 11). It was, of course, originally intended as a mirror but now serves as a picture frame, although the mirror could easily be replaced. Both pieces are typical of the quality of Pierre Bex’s output and would make elegant accessories for a contemporary dressing table.
