Britannia metal Art Nouveau Card Tray, WMF with stamped marks, early C20th
A shallow tray in the form of a leaf, the underside with two short supporting feet, delicately cast with a lady’s head forming the handle, her long hair flowing down on each side of her face, the surface with trailing holly leaves and berries and the edges with a rope twist border. This is a fine example of one of the classic forms produced by the famous German metalware manufacturer WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) in the early years of the twentieth century. There were many variants but the principle was that of a shallow leaf shape tray decorated with ladies’ heads and stylised foliage designed to hold visiting cards. This example is particularly well cast with an attractive design and the original surface has retained its patina in fine condition. The metal used was a form of pewter called Britannia metal which was electro plated with an ‘Antico Silver’ finish and frequently used to create these classic Art Nouveau pieces. This explains the marks, which are extremely clearly stamped. ‘EP’ for the plating and ‘AS’ for the silver finish. Dating to the early 1900s this would be a desirable acquisition for collectors of early WMF metalwares or devotees of the Art Nouveau style in general.
