Silver Thimble with Mice, Hallmarks for London 1920

An amusing silver thimble of typical bucket form, the surface with two dotted panels, the front one with two mice crawling on a tree branch and the rear one with a single mouse climbing a sheaf of wheat and peering over to the dotted surface of the top which also has a small pin hole, a ridged band at the base above which at the back is a four character hallmark, the first not clearly legible but perhaps ending in ‘S’ ‘R’, the second with a lion passant, the third with the asay mark for London and the fourth with a date letter which again is not clear but seems to be ‘E’ in the format for 1920. An identical thimble can be found in the Art Collections of the City of Nuremberg (see images 9, 10) but is less crisply cast. Otherwise, the design seems to be quite rare.
