LOT NUMBER 74
Round cut glass scent bottle with silver screw top, John Fenton & Sons, hallmarked Birmingham 1887
A round glass scent bottle of near globular form, the surface deeply cut with a diamond pattern design, the top with a screw top mount fitting to the near globular form lid with deeply embossed decoration of stylised scrolling foliage on a hammer punched ground and a four character hallmark (i) the lion passant for the purity of the silver (ii) the anchor symbol for Birmingham (iii) the date code letter ‘n’ for 1887 (iv) the maker’s mark ‘J F & S’ (very slightly obscured) for John Fenton and Sons.John Fenton and Sons were silversmiths operating in Birmingham during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras and were known for producing small scale silverwares and particularly mounts and lids for cut glass bottles. This lid, then, is a fine example of their work and well complements the opulence of the decoration of the glass bottle it is fitted to, an example in miniature of the majestic Victorian style.
