LOT NUMBER 4
Chinese Export Nanking Pattern Saucer, Qianlong period (1736-1795)
A fine quality Chinese Export saucer in the typical form of a shallow bowl with a small short foot, decorated in underglaze blue with a landscape scene, pagodas on rocky outcrops by a river, within an elaborate border, floral and geometric designs with cell work, the edge with gilt highlighting. The pattern here is a fine example of the ‘Nanking’ wares, so called from their port of export, produced by the Chinese in the second half of the eighteenth century. This saucer comes from a tea service and is rather larger than the standard size implying a matching cup of similar proportions. Some of these tea services had gilt decoration added on arrival at their destination; it is usually held that this was done in England. The result has a hint of luxury and is highly decorative.Size: | Diam 14.3cm, Ht 3.4cm, Base 8.7cm |
