Murano glass Sommerso three layer Tear Drop shape Vase, 1960s
A stoutly blown art glass vase of pear or tear drop shape, very thickly walled with a narrow aperture at the top, three different layers of coloured glass, blue pink and magenta, formed using the ‘sommerso’ technique (Italian ‘submerged’) and set in clear glass, the base flat. Sommerso pieces are formed by dipping coloured glass into molten glass of a different colour, before blowing the glass into the required form, creating two or more contrasting layers without the colours mixing together. The technique was developed by the Murano factory in Venice and there are similar signed pieces by Flavio Poli and Luigi Onesto which date from the 1960s. The creator of this piece is anonymous but no less accomplished; indeed few other examples are found with three layers of coloured glass. It is reasonable to assume then that this is the product of one of the workshops at Murano and dates to the same period of manufacture as the signed examples we have.
