Chinese painting on silk, Camellias with a small Bee, signed, C20th
An elegant Chinese painting on silk of a branch of flowering camellias with a small bee hovering towards the top, an inscription and red seal mark to the right most likely with the artist’s signature. This is a fine example of the paintings on silk exported to the West from China during the twentieth century. The delicacy of the composition is very much in the ‘Chinese Taste’ and the camellia in Chinese culture symbolised wealth and prosperity and is therefore appropriately accompanied here by a bee which symbolises industry leading to prosperity itself; indeed the two were often represented together in Chinese art. While the signature cannot be identified, this picture most likely dates to the first half of the twentieth century and the frame, which is European, is probably contemporary or near contemporary with it. The combination is extremely attractive producing a timeless if modest example of Chinese art.| Size: | Frame : 28.5cm x 33.5cm x 1.5cm Painting : 27.5cm x 23cm |
